Nick Elkins: Director

BA(Hons) Pg-Dip

In 1998 I began my Architecture degree programme at The University of Plymouth School of Architecture.

In the final year of my degree, an opportunity arose to work with Stan Bolt: Architect during my year in industry in 2001. The experience was rich and diverse and with an emphasis on quality in every aspect of the role. The careful and considered detailing of all elements within a project, in tandem with the focused involvement on site was extremely rewarding. This experience, combined with Stan´s approach and philosophy towards design along with his unwavering enthusiasm and passion, galvanised my desire for a career in architecture.

After being awarded my Post Graduate Diploma in 2004, I was fortunate to be able to re-join Stan as he had taken on some exciting new projects and I remained with the Practice for the next sixteen years.

We were fortunate to have been commissioned by clients´ with some extraordinary and challenging sites, a large percentage of them in exposed and demanding coastal locations. This brought with it a heightened level of commitment to ensure the building envelope performs its basic functions whilst displaying a clear architectural language, borne from a direct response to the brief and its landscape setting.

The sophistication of construction behind each detail along with the carefully orchestrated interplay between materials / spaces / forms and their appropriateness to the wider context is testament to the success of the Practice. The work has been recognised with the numerous Awards, most notably to date, ten RIBA Awards (three RIBA Design Awards, four RIBA Town & Country Awards and four RIBA Regional Awards), two of which I ran throughout the full construction phase - the most recent near Salcombe, Devon in 2015. During my time with the Practice, I ran eleven ´one off´ projects through to completion on site – all involving an intimate engagement throughout every aspect of the project process and development. Achieving high quality buildings has involved many close collaborations and working relationships with Clients, Local Authorities, Structural Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, Suppliers and Contractors in tandem with a good working knowledge of construction methods, an in-depth interest and understanding of materials, products, their potential, and their limitations.

Since moving to Spain in 2020 I am very much looking forward to continuing to produce creative buildings with the same passion, philosophy, and unique interpretation.
